When I had Max, my food-loving and energetic Labrador, neutered, I did it knowing it was the best choice for his health.
I wanted to prevent future issues like tumors and reduce unwanted behaviors.
The surgery went great, he recovered quickly, and I thought everything could just go back to normal.
But then things started to change: Max, who was always active, began sleeping more, acting hungrier than ever, and… gaining weight.
In just a few weeks, he wasn’t the lean dog he used to be. That’s when I realized: neutered dogs need a little extra care — and supplements can be great allies.
If you have a dog that’s been neutered or you’re planning to do it, stick around.
I’ll share everything I’ve learned and what worked with Max here at home.
What changes after neutering?
Neutering affects hormone levels, especially testosterone in males.
As a result, the metabolism slows down, energy output drops, and appetite tends to increase.
With Max, the signs were clear:
- Constant hunger
- Fast weight gain
- Lazier during play
- Slightly oily coat
- And reduced energy throughout the day
It didn’t take long for our vet to explain that it was time to adjust Max’s diet — and consider supplementation as part of his new phase of life.
Supplements that worked for Max
Here are the ones that made a difference for us — all under veterinary guidance, of course.
Every dog is different, so what helped Max might need to be adapted for your pup.
1. L-carnitine
This was the first one our vet recommended. L-carnitine helps convert fat into energy and is great for managing weight in dogs with slower metabolisms.
Max started having more energy again — even chasing after his ball like before!
2. Omega-3
This one’s a classic. It was already part of Max’s routine, but we increased it after the surgery.
It supports skin, coat, joints, and has anti-inflammatory effects. Plus, Max loves the flavor when I drizzle it on his food.
3. Chondroitin and Glucosamine
As Max gained weight, his joints started showing signs of strain.
These two ingredients help protect cartilage and keep joints healthy — especially important for medium and large dogs.
4. B-complex vitamins
These help regulate metabolism, control appetite, and support the nervous system.
I added them in liquid form, and Max became more alert and active.
5. Probiotics
After the surgery, Max’s digestion got a little off — more gas, softer stools… Probiotics balanced his gut health, and now his digestion is smooth and regular.
Important reminders
Keep in mind that supplements don’t replace a balanced diet, exercise, or affection. Here at home, I also:
- Reduced his food portions
- Increased daily walks
- Started using interactive toys to stimulate movement and mental focus
And of course, I follow our vet’s instructions to the letter. No guessing games here.
Is it worth it?
Absolutely. Today Max is healthier, more energetic, and at a stable weight.
And that only happened because I realized that neutering isn’t the end of the care — it’s the beginning of a new chapter.
If you’ve gone through this or are about to, know that with small adjustments and lots of love, your dog can keep living a happy, healthy, active life.
Because love also means adapting. And caring is about being there through every stage — especially when things change. 🐶💚
