Having a large dog is, quite literally, a heavyweight experience. I say this because I live with my Max —a 40-pound labrador who leaves a trail of hair (and love) wherever she goes.
And let me tell you: keeping her coat shiny and healthy wasn’t easy at first.
But over time, I learned a few secrets that completely transformed the look and health of her fur.

1. Nutrition: It Starts From the Inside Out
Before buying any fancy shampoo or supplement, the first thing to check is your dog’s food.
With Max, I noticed a huge difference when I switched her to a high-quality kibble rich in omega-3, omega-6, and real protein. Her coat started shining in just a few weeks!
Some people also add fish oil or a tiny bit of extra virgin olive oil to meals—but always consult your vet first.
2. Bathing the Right Way—Not Too Much, Not Too Little
I made the mistake of bathing Max too often, thinking it would keep her coat shinier. But it backfired—her fur got dry and dull.
For dogs with long or thick coats, a bath every 15 to 20 days is ideal. And of course, always use dog-specific shampoos, preferably with moisturizing formulas.
Now I use an oatmeal-based shampoo and a light conditioner.
The result? Her coat is honestly softer than mine 😅
3. Brushing is Key (and Becomes a Bonding Moment)
Brushing your large dog’s coat isn’t just about looks—it’s about health. It removes dead hair, prevents mats, distributes natural oils, and is a great bonding time.
At home, brushing turned into a ritual: every Tuesday and Friday night, while I watch TV, Max lies next to me and I brush her.
At first, she was unsure, but now she rolls over for belly brushes like she’s at the spa!
If your dog sheds a lot, tools like the “Furminator” can help remove the undercoat.
4. Hydration Isn’t Just for Us
Did you know there are deep-conditioning masks for dogs? Yup! When Max’a coat looked dull, I tried one (recommended by our groomer), and the results were amazing.
His fur was shiny again and felt so soft.
If you live in a dry area or your dog spends a lot of time in the sun, ask your vet about occasional deep conditioning.
5. Always Offer Fresh Water
It might sound basic, but it’s essential. Healthy skin and coat also come from proper hydration.
I leave big bowls of fresh water around and change the water 2–3 times a day. Yes, Max splashes it everywhere when he drinks, but hey—worth it!
6. Regular Vet Check-Ups
Not everything can be fixed with baths and brushing. Sometimes coat issues are signs of allergies, fungi, mites, or hormonal imbalances.
That’s why regular vet check-ups are so important.
It was actually during a check-up that I learned Lua had a mild food allergy. After adjusting her diet, her coat improved dramatically.
Having a large dog with a beautiful coat is about more than just appearance. It’s a reflection of good health, proper care, and lots of love.
And no, you don’t have to spend a fortune—just a bit of consistency and attention makes all the difference.
These days, Max gets compliments wherever she goes.
