One thing that always grabs my attention in movies and shows is when a giant dog shows up on screen. It’s automatic: my heart melts.
Whether it’s a funny moment, a cute scene, or even a high-action sequence, these gentle giants always steal the spotlight.
And trust me, there are plenty of them! Over the years, several oversized pups have won audiences over — and in many cases, they’ve completely outshined the human stars (and let’s be honest, we don’t mind one bit).
So today, I want to share with you some of the most iconic giant dogs from movies and TV. Maybe you’ll recognize a few and feel a wave of nostalgia, just like I did.
1. Beethoven – The Most Famous Saint Bernard Ever
I have to start with Beethoven. This clumsy Saint Bernard was the star of one of the most beloved film franchises of the 90s. I remember watching the first movie as a kid and being completely enchanted by his size, goofiness, and the chaos he caused.
That classic scene where he jumps on the bed and leaves everything covered in drool is still fresh in my mind (and honestly, I usually hate drool, but I’ll make an exception for him!).
Beethoven gave us the image of a giant dog who might knock over a lamp or two, but would do anything to protect his family.
2. Clifford – The Legendary Big Red Dog
Ah yes, Clifford the Big Red Dog! If you grew up watching cartoons, you probably remember him.
And if not, maybe you caught the live-action movie released in 2021.
Clifford starts out as a regular pup but grows… a lot. He’s literally the size of a school bus. But what I love most about him is his sweetness.
Despite his massive size, Clifford is kind, loyal, and always getting into silly adventures with his owner Emily.
Clifford is the perfect example of how love makes us grow — in every way!
3. Fang – Hagrid’s Loyal Dog in Harry Potter
If you’re a Harry Potter fan, you’ll definitely remember Fang, Hagrid’s enormous dog. In the books, he’s described as a “boarhound” (which resembles a Great Dane), but in the movies, he was portrayed as a Neapolitan Mastiff.
What I love about Fang is that, despite his massive size, he’s a total scaredy-cat.
Always whining and looking for cuddles when things get spooky — the perfect reminder that not every big dog is brave.
Still, he’s fiercely loyal to Hagrid and always by his side during the most important moments. And honestly, who wouldn’t want a Fang of their own?
4. Marmaduke – The Clumsy Great Dane
Another giant dog who made a splash in Hollywood is Marmaduke, the most chaotic Great Dane I’ve ever seen.
The movie is packed with comedy, mayhem, and all the chaos we love when it comes to super-sized pets.
Based on a classic comic strip in the U.S., Marmaduke became an icon for being the “giant who has no clue how big he is.”
I laughed out loud watching him knock over furniture, scare the neighbors, and cause trouble everywhere he went.
5. Direwolves – The Giant Wolves of Game of Thrones
Okay, they’re technically not dogs… but the direwolves from Game of Thrones deserve a spot on this list!
They look like oversized huskies or malamutes — but epic. Each Stark sibling had one: Ghost, Nymeria, Summer, Shaggydog, Grey Wind, and Lady.
For me, Ghost (Jon Snow’s companion) was the most incredible. Quiet, protective, and loyal to the end — a true warrior with fur. I definitely cried during some of their scenes (no spoilers, but if you know, you know).
Big Dogs, Big Hearts
If there’s one thing all these canine characters have in common, it’s that — no matter how big they are, they’re full of love, loyalty, and charm.
They show us that true strength comes with gentleness and that the best heroes sometimes come on four legs and weigh over 100 pounds.
So tell me — which one of these giants is your favorite? Or is there another one you love that I didn’t mention?
Whether on the big screen, small screen, or right on your couch — giant dogs always steal the show. 🐶❤️🎬
