If there’s one thing I’ve learned after adopting Max — a beautiful and mischievous 40-kilo Labrador — it’s that taking care of a large dog’s oral health takes work, but it’s absolutely essential.
At first, I have to admit I didn’t give it much thought. I was more focused on quality food, vaccinations, and daily walks.
But one day, while playing with him in the backyard, I was hit with a breath so bad it nearly knocked me over. No exaggeration.
That’s when the alarm went off in my head: “Am I forgetting to take care of my big guy’s mouth?”
After doing a lot of research, talking to the vet, and testing several products, I finally set up an oral care routine that’s been working really well.
In this post, I’m going to share with you the best oral hygiene products for large dogs, all based on what’s actually worked for us.
Why is oral hygiene so important?
Just like with humans, a dog’s oral health is directly connected to their overall well-being.
If neglected, it can lead to bad breath, gum disease, tartar buildup, infections, and even heart problems.
With large dogs, the issue is even more pronounced. Because of their size, they tend to accumulate more plaque, and the cleaning process can be a bit more challenging.
And let’s be honest, they’re not always thrilled about having their teeth cleaned, right?
Max, for instance, is super sweet, but he absolutely hates when I mess with his mouth.
So I had to discover practical, effective products that he would tolerate.
Top Oral Hygiene Products for Large Dogs
1. Long-handled toothbrush + dog-specific toothpaste
This may sound basic, but a good long-handled toothbrush makes a world of difference. I use one from Pet Clean with soft, angled bristles.
As for the toothpaste? I always go for the ones flavored like chicken or beef — Max loves it!
We brush twice a week at home. Sometimes he resists, but with a tasty treat afterward, he usually gives in.
Oh, and never use human toothpaste — it contains fluoride and can be toxic to dogs.
2. Antiseptic dental gel
On the days when I can’t manage to brush Max’s teeth (it happens!), I apply an antiseptic dental gel from the brand Vetnil.
It helps fight bacteria and freshens breath. The best part? You just apply it to the gums with your finger or some gauze.
Max doesn’t mind it too much, which makes life easier.
This kind of gel is perfect for maintaining oral health when brushing isn’t possible.
3. Functional treats (dental chews)
Dental treats are a lifesaver for busy days. The best ones we’ve tried are Pedigree Dentastix for Large Dogs.
Besides being tasty (at least according to Max), they help reduce tartar and massage the gums.
I give them to him three times a week as a “healthy reward.” He waits for them eagerly.
4. Textured chew toys
Did you know some toys actually help clean your dog’s teeth? Yep!
Those rubber toys with ridges or designs that encourage chewing can really make a difference.
Max has a bone-shaped rubber chew toy with bristles that’s his absolute favorite.
He plays with it constantly, cleaning his teeth without even realizing it.
5. Dog mouthwash
Yes, dog mouthwash is a thing! Of course, it’s not for them to spit out like we do — it’s made to be mixed with their drinking water.
I use one from Virbac that’s mild and doesn’t alter the water’s taste.
The benefits build up over time, helping to improve breath and reduce bacteria.
I was afraid Max would stop drinking water, but he didn’t even notice the difference.
My golden tip
If you’ve got a big dog like Max, the most important thing is to start early.
If your dog is already an adult, go slowly, gently, and never force it. Around here, patience and consistency were key.
Also, nothing replaces a vet check-up. At least once a year, I take Max for a professional dental cleaning.
It’s an investment in his health and well-being.
Caring for a large dog’s oral hygiene might seem tricky at first, but with the right products and a solid routine, it becomes manageable.
With Max, it was just a matter of adjusting our habits and finding what worked best for him.
So if you’ve got a big furry friend at home, don’t wait until the bad breath kicks in.
Start caring for their mouth now and give them more health, happiness, and sweet-smelling kisses!
