Human Foods That Are Safe and Healthy for Large Dogs

Anyone who lives with a large dog knows: their appetite feels like a superpower. At my house, Max, gives me the look every time I sit down to eat.

You know the one: eyes locked on your plate like you owe him a bite.

At first, I wasn’t sure what I could safely share with him.

But over time (and after plenty of research and vet advice), I learned that some human foods are not only safe but incredibly healthy for dogs, especially the big guys who need extra nutrition to keep that big body working smoothly.

That said — just because a food is “natural” doesn’t mean it’s safe for dogs.

Some things that are great for us (like grapes or onions) can actually be toxic for them.

So I put together a list of the human foods I safely give Max, under my vet’s guidance, that truly support his health.

🥕 1. Carrots

Crunchy, naturally sweet, and full of vitamin A and fiber, carrots are great for teeth, vision, and digestion.

Max loves chewing on raw carrots like a healthy doggy snack.

🍗 2. Cooked Chicken (no seasoning)

A lean source of high-quality protein, cooked chicken is easy to digest and perfect for maintaining strong muscles.

It’s great mixed with rice or added to a homemade diet.

🍳 3. Boiled Eggs

Eggs are little powerhouses: rich in protein, B vitamins, biotin, and healthy fats. They support strong nails, a shiny coat, and overall strength.

🍌 4. Bananas

Yes, dogs can eat bananas! In moderation, they’re a great source of potassium and fiber. I give Max a few slices as a “sweet treat” when he’s being extra good.

🐟 5. Sardines (in water, no salt)

Loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, sardines are amazing for joints, skin, and heart health. Max devours them — but I stick to one or two servings per week.

🥬 6. Spinach

Packed with iron, magnesium, antioxidants, and vitamin K, spinach is great for overall health. I lightly cook it and mix it with rice and meat.

🍠 7. Sweet Potatoes

One of the best sources of clean energy for dogs. They’re low on the glycemic index, support digestion, and help with satiety. Max gets calm and happy after a good sweet potato meal.

🍏 8. Apples (no seeds)

Refreshing and full of fiber and vitamin C, apple slices make a great natural treat. Just be sure to remove the seeds — they’re toxic to dogs.

🥦 9. Broccoli

Broccoli is one of the healthiest veggies out there! It’s full of vitamins, antioxidants, and fiber. Max wasn’t a fan at first, but now he eats it happily (especially when mixed with beef!).

🥥 10. Coconut Oil

Just a teaspoon a day in Max’s food supports digestion, strengthens immunity, and makes his coat glow. A small but mighty addition!

⚠️ Important: What to Avoid — Even If It’s “Human Food”

Not everything we eat is safe for our pups. Here are a few things to never feed your dog:

  • Grapes or raisins
  • Onion and garlic
  • Chocolate
  • Coffee or black tea
  • Avocado
  • Salted or seasoned foods
  • Raw yeast dough or bread dough

💡 Pro Tip: Moderation and Vet Guidance

Even healthy foods should be introduced slowly and in moderation — always plain, no spices or sauces.

I only added these foods to Max’s routine with the help of a veterinary nutritionist because every dog is different.

🐶 Final Thoughts: Sharing is Caring (When Done Right)

Since I started sharing the right foods with Max, I’ve noticed big improvements: more energy, less shedding, better digestion, and a shinier coat.

And the best part? It brought us even closer. Prepping his meals became our little daily ritual — a way to show love beyond belly rubs.

If you’ve got a big pup at home, try adding one or two of these safe human foods. I bet they’ll love it — and their health will thank you!
