One thing I quickly learned after adopting my big boy Max, is that nutrition is everything when it comes to large dogs.
It’s not just about feeding them enough — it’s about feeding them right.
Large breed dogs have different metabolisms. They need more energy, extra joint support, and a stronger immune system.
And in my mission to improve Max’s well-being, I discovered some powerful natural allies: the so-called superfoods for dogs.
These are natural, affordable ingredients packed with nutrients that truly make a difference in your dog’s health.
The best part? Most of them are already in your kitchen.
So here’s my personal list of the 10 superfoods that help large dogs live healthier and happier lives:
🥦 1. Broccoli
I know, it sounds like human diet food (and it is), but broccoli is rich in fiber, vitamin C, and vitamin K. It supports digestion and boosts the immune system.
Max doesn’t love it raw, but cooked and mixed into his meals? He eats it all.
🐟 2. Sardines
Yes — canned sardines (in water or olive oil, no added salt) are fantastic. Packed with omega-3 fatty acids, they help with joint health, heart function, and even keep your dog’s coat shiny.
🥕 3. Carrots
Crunchy, slightly sweet, and full of beta-carotene (which turns into vitamin A), carrots are great for eye health, skin, and teeth. Max loves chewing on raw carrot sticks as snacks.
🥚 4. Eggs
Boiled eggs are basically a miracle food. They’re loaded with protein, healthy fats, B vitamins, and biotin, all of which help build muscle and support skin and coat health.
🍠 5. Sweet Potatoes
A top-notch source of clean, stable energy, sweet potatoes are rich in fiber, vitamin A, and antioxidants.
Perfect for active dogs like Max who love to run and play nonstop.
🥬 6. Spinach
In moderation, spinach is a nutrient bomb: iron, calcium, magnesium, vitamin K, and powerful antioxidants.
I usually sauté it lightly before adding it to Max’s meals.
🥥 7. Coconut Oil
I add a teaspoon a day to Max’s food — it helps with digestion, keeps the skin healthy, and gives his coat that irresistible shine everyone compliments.
🍎 8. Apples
Chopped apples (without seeds) are full of vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants. They’re light, refreshing, and perfect as a natural treat — especially in the summer.
🍗 9. Chicken or Beef Liver
When cooked and served in moderation, liver is a super source of iron, zinc, vitamin A, and B12. It supports blood health, boosts energy, and Max absolutely loves the taste.
🍚 10. Brown Rice
A common base in homemade meals, brown rice provides energy, fiber, and minerals. It’s easy to digest and goes well with just about everything.
⚠️ Important note:
Even though these are amazing foods, remember: every dog is unique. What works for Max may not be ideal for your pup. So before serving all 10, check with your vet or a pet nutritionist.
What worked for me was introducing these foods slowly and watching how Max responded — always under professional guidance.
🐶 The result? A happier, healthier dog!
Since I started incorporating these superfoods into Max’s routine, he’s more energetic, his coat is shinier, and even his mood has improved (yes, dogs have moods too!).
And the best part? I didn’t have to break the bank — just used real, whole foods that I already had in the pantry.
Have you tried any of these superfoods with your big dog? Want to add another to the list? Let me know in the comments — I’d love to hear your story!
